Sprinkler Winterization in Conroe, TX

Professional sprinkler winterization in Conroe, TX. We blow out each zone, protect backflow preventers, and drain valves clean.

If you've got an irrigation system in Conroe, you need to winterize it before that first hard freeze hits—I've seen too many busted pipes and cracked backflow preventers to let that happen to your yard. Planet Green TX has been protecting systems across Montgomery County since 2004, and we know exactly what our freeze weather does to unprotected irrigation. Most systems take about an hour.

Why Conroe Needs Sprinkler Winterization

Conroe's occasional winter freezes wreak havoc. Water trapped in pipes freezes and expands, cracking everything from the main lines to individual sprinkler heads.

The high annual rainfall here means systems are often saturated heading into colder months. That extra water becomes a liability when temperatures drop. Nine times out of ten it's the backflow preventer that goes first—those brass fittings just can't handle the expansion.

We've seen entire systems destroyed by a single hard freeze. Pipe bursts lead to costly repairs that could've been avoided with proper winterization. Since 2004, we've watched folks learn this lesson the hard way, which is why we start reminding customers in October.

How We Winterize Your System in Conroe

First, we locate your main water shut-off and isolate the irrigation system. No point blowing air through pipes that are still getting fresh water from the supply line.

Then we connect our air compressor to the system and work through each zone individually. Zone 1 gets blown out completely before we move to zone 2. Each sprinkler head needs to pop up and discharge any remaining water—we watch for that telltale spray that tells us we're getting everything out.

The backflow preventer gets special treatment. We drain the test cocks and make sure those brass fittings are bone dry. Finally, we inspect the controller and make notes about any zones that seemed sluggish or problematic.

Most systems in the Beach neighborhood and around Carl Barton Jr Park take about an hour to winterize properly. Larger properties with 8+ zones might run closer to 90 minutes.

Timing Your Winterization Service

Before the freeze rush hits, folks are usually pretty relaxed about scheduling. But once that first cold snap shows up in the forecast, our phones start ringing non-stop.

November is typically ideal timing for Conroe. You want the service done before any hard freeze, but not so early that you're still running the system regularly. We track weather patterns and start reaching out to regular customers when conditions look right.

December appointments are still fine. Availability gets tight quickly. January winterizations happen, but they're usually emergency calls after someone's already had a problem.

Got Questions About Winterization?

How long does the service take? Usually about an hour for a standard residential system. Larger properties near Isaac Conroe Homestead with extensive irrigation can run longer.

Do you need us home during the service? Nope. As long as we can access the controller and locate the main water shut-off, we're good. We'll leave a service summary and any recommendations.

What if we don't winterize the system? You're gambling with expensive repairs. Frozen pipes crack, sprinkler heads split, and backflow preventers fail. The repair costs typically run 5-10 times more than the winterization service.

Can we do it ourselves? Technically yes, but most homeowners don't have the right air compressor or know the proper pressure settings. Too little air leaves water behind. Too much air can damage components.

How it works

Our Winterization Process

1

Step 1: Shut Off Water Supply

First thing we do is turn off the main water supply to your sprinkler system. What's usually going on is there's a shutoff valve somewhere between your house and the backflow preventer. We locate that and get it closed tight.

2

Step 2: Blow Out Each Zone

This is where the real work happens. We hook up our compressor to the system and blow out each zone one at a time until all the water is pushed out of the lines. Nine times out of ten, you'll see a good spray of water come out of the heads at first, then just air. That's what we want to see.

3

Step 3: Protect the Backflow

The backflow preventer gets special attention because it's the most expensive part to replace if it freezes. We insulate it properly and make sure any drain valves on it are open. This component alone can cost $300-500 to replace, so we don't mess around here.

4

Step 4: Drain Valves

All the zone valves get drained next. What's usually going on is there are small drain screws or caps on each valve that we open to let any remaining water out. Even a little bit of water left in there can crack a valve body when it freezes.

5

Step 5: Shut Down Controller

Last step is turning off the sprinkler controller for the winter. We'll either flip the main switch to "off" or pull the plug, depending on what type you have. Come spring, we'll get everything fired back up and check that all the zones are working right.

Questions

Sprinkler Winterization in Conroe

In Conroe, TX, you should typically winterize your sprinkler system by mid to late November, before the first hard freeze. While Conroe only experiences about 8 freeze days per year, those freezing temperatures can cause serious damage to unprotected irrigation lines and components.

The key is timing the winterization before overnight temperatures consistently drop below 32°F. Even though our winters are relatively mild compared to northern regions, the occasional hard freeze can burst pipes and damage sprinkler heads if water remains in the system.

When water freezes inside your sprinkler pipes, it expands and can crack or burst the lines, fittings, and sprinkler heads. This damage often goes unnoticed until spring when you turn the system back on, leading to costly repairs and water waste.

Frozen backflow preventers are particularly expensive to replace, sometimes costing hundreds of dollars. The underground pipes can also crack, requiring excavation and professional repair work that's much more expensive than preventive winterization.

While some homeowners attempt DIY winterization using a shop vacuum or manual drain valves, professional winterization using compressed air is much more thorough and reliable. Compressed air blowouts ensure complete water removal from all zones, including low spots where water typically remains.

Professional winterization also includes inspecting components for existing damage and properly shutting off water supplies. The investment in professional service typically pays for itself by preventing just one major repair from freeze damage.

Sprinkler winterization costs in Conroe typically range from $75 to $150 for most residential systems, depending on the number of zones and system complexity. This cost is minimal compared to potential repair expenses from freeze damage.

The price usually includes compressed air blowout of all zones, shutting off the main water supply, and basic system inspection. Larger properties or systems with more zones may cost slightly more, but the investment protects against much costlier spring repairs and water waste.
