Sprinkler Head Won't Pop Up

When a sprinkler head won't pop up, the zone isn't covering what it's supposed to — and the patch of grass that depends on it starts to suffer fast.

Likely causes

What's usually causing this

01

Clogged nozzle or filter screen

Sediment and small debris jam the filter screen at the top of the riser. Water pressure that should lift the head gets diverted, and the head stays mostly retracted.

02

Broken or cracked riser

Physical damage to the riser — usually from impact — prevents the head from extending fully. The head tries to rise but binds against the broken section.

03

Low zone pressure

If the zone valve isn't fully opening, or the supply line has restricted flow somewhere upstream, the pressure may be too low to drive the pop-up mechanism. Multiple heads on the same zone show the same symptom.

04

Worn internal seal

Older heads develop seal failures inside the body. The internal spring still works but the seal can't hold pressure long enough to drive a full pop-up cycle.

How we fix it

Our repair approach

Diagnosis takes a manual zone test and a close look at the affected head. Most stuck-head calls resolve with a simple nozzle clean or full head replacement. Pressure issues require tracing the zone back to its valve and supply — slightly more involved but still typically a same-visit fix.
