One Zone Won't Turn On

When one zone in your system won't activate while others run normally, the problem is almost always isolated to that zone's valve or its wiring path.

Likely causes

What's usually causing this

01

Failed solenoid

The solenoid is the electromagnet that opens the zone valve when the controller signals. Solenoids fail with age — usually a coil burnout. The controller sends the signal but the valve doesn't open.

02

Wiring break in the zone line

Underground wires get nicked by mowers, edgers, or shovels. A broken or shorted wire prevents the controller's signal from reaching the solenoid. Common at irrigation-line crossings and near garden bed edges.

03

Stuck or seized valve diaphragm

Sediment or mineral buildup can lock the valve diaphragm in the closed position. Even with a working solenoid, the valve physically won't open. Often a sign of a system that hasn't been serviced in years.

04

Controller programming or output failure

Less commonly, the controller itself has lost the zone — either from a programming error or a failed output channel on the controller board. Quick to diagnose but easy to overlook if you assume the issue is in the field.

How we fix it

Our repair approach

We test the controller output first to confirm the signal is reaching the field. Then we check the solenoid resistance and the wiring path with a voltmeter. From there it's a targeted fix: solenoid swap, wire splice, valve rebuild, or controller diagnostics. Same-visit completion in most cases.
